The book is about a difficult subject but Jodi Picoult handles it well and presents it in a way that makes you think about what happened and doesn't judge the characters for the way they acted. Picoult moves forward and backwards in time to help us understand events in the past which then make us able to understand things in the present. And I guess it is the story of love and what a person might do for love, love for a girlfriend and love for a child. Their families live next door to each other and they are very friendly as well. The basic plot of the story is that Chris and Emily are two 17 year olds who have known each other their whole lives and have been girlfriend and boyfriend for several years. At the end of the novel there are some discussion questions suitable for use in a book group but they are also interesting to read yourself as they make you think about different aspects of the book in a different way and I found these quite interesting. .
